Well, it was recently considered at the O Music Awards, a brand new online award show sponsored by MTV that lets viewers vote for their favorite artists. Knight of Wands was nominated for “Most Innovative Music Video” and ended up in the top 5, thanks to everyones’ votes!! Eli even participated in a panel discussion with the likes of Jermaine Dupri, Wayne Isham, and Brenna Ehrlich on what it means for a video to be “innovative.” Needless to say we are very proud and can’t wait to see what he does next!

THE NEW GENERATION DIRECTOR: MATT AMATO

Matt is the leading music video director of the new generation in the LA scene. “I’ve been playing piano and writing stories while listening to music since I was a kid, so this is my foundation for making video’s. Music is my first and foremost inspiration.” He is a craftsman of weaving music and visual images. “Music and visual images exist independently, but when you mix them together a certain alchemy happens. The rhythm of the music doesn’t necessarily have to sync with the visual images. The most important part of editing is feeling and intuition.” Matt Amato has been directing videos for Dido, Beach House, Bon Iver, The Dodo’s, Mia Doi Todd, etc. and he is drawn to collaborating with musicians. “Because musicians are usually reluctant camera subjects, they often times appear more sensual and attractive than someone who is constantly aware of the process. It’s possible that the camera can film the soul if it’s willing. It is important to create an environment so that the musician can behave naturally.” In 2003, Matt gathered artists who love music and film to establish The Masses, including the late Heath Ledger. These days Matt is leaning towards making video’s for all outlets of new media, the internet and mobile media. “Macro and micro is important. I’ve been shooting with a minimalistic approach to accommodate all different screens. This art is progressing with people, and music is part of life for every human being, and listening to music raises your soul. I’d like to continue making music video’s that heighten that sense of spirit.” This month Matt travels to Tokyo to continue his work with Powershovel, the company responsible for the innovative Harinezumi camera.

Au Revoir Simone goes interactive in Eli Stonberg’s video for ‘Knight of Wands’

It seems appropriate that director Eli Stonberg should answer his cellphone for an interview while standing out in front of his favorite video store. And while Vidiots, a treasure trove of indie video sales and rentals in Santa Monica, seems like a perfect place to gather inspiration, the 24-year-old Massachusetts native can’t stop talking about how music videos, his main forte, are destined to break the fourth wall and turn fans into directors. If you’ve seen his latest interactive video for “Knight of Wands,” by ethereal, all-female indie popsters Au Revoir Simone, you know he’s already off to a good start.

“There’s a whole wide-open frontier of videos with interactive stuff and I wanna be on the forefront of that,” said Stonberg.

He’s certainly got plenty of company. Whether fans are noodling around with the latest Arcade Fire video for “The Wilderness Downtown” by Chris Milk developed by Google, or the dazzling cosmos of Broken Bell’s “October” interactive short, the ability for views to tweak and personalize a music video experience is today’s industry innovation du jour.

That’s definitely the goal he had in mind for Stonberg’s video for “Knight of Wands,” off of the Brooklyn synth trio’s latest album “Still Night, Still Light.”

Blurring the lines between live action and an interactive coloring book, the online video—complete with its own Adobe Flash Player site—allows viewers to douse an illustration of the band with colors and patterns of choice while the song plays in the background. Eventually, the video morphs back into a live action ending, with the spindly members of the band triple-teaming a Roland synth, crooning in harmony to the song’s end. You also get to share your coloring job on a Flickr page dedicated to the video site.

“When you show your video, you’re actually showing your creation…I want people to have fun with it,” said Stonberg, who offered to do the video for the band for literally no budget along with a slew of volunteers, including illustrator Chris Sanchez and Web producers Jeff Greco and Ben Atkins. The only money involved was plane fare fronted by the band to fly Stonberg from L.A. to New York to direct the project. The video debuted last month and continues to attract viewers who flock to the “Knight of Wands” Flickr page to upload their personalized band artwork.

The journey to creating the video was a long, uh, drawn-out process. Stonberg’s first chance interaction with ARS members Erika Forster, Annie Hart and Heather D’Angelo was two years ago. They’d just cut him off in traffic while he was driving in Los Angeles to a hotel party to meet up with members of Passion Pit, whom he’d just worked with on a video for their song “Sleepyhead.”

“I remember this car full of pretty girls cutting me off in this traffic jam, and I just waved them on,” said Stonberg, who’s part of the Masses film and video collective. To his surprise, they were all headed to the same party, where they eventually struck up a conversation, kicking around off-the-wall music video ideas..an interactive coloring book being one of them. They exchanged info and promised that they’d work with each other one day.

Though “one day” took a little longer than anticipated, Stonberg said the chance to push his creative repertoire and break new ground was worth the wait. Known for his acid trip, visual prowess working with acts like Daedelus and Rio En Medio, Stonberg credits his creative eye, not his technical touch, with the success of his projects. Luckily, his crack production team was able to take Stonberg’s otherworldly ideas into the realm of possibility.

“I’m all about the ideas as opposed to the execution,” said Stonberg. “It’s all about getting all these crazy ideas out of my head.”

– Nate Jackson

The elegant, hard-bound art book and DVD features work by Bruce Weber, Yayoi Kusama, Richard McGuire, Charles Burns, Claire de Rouen, and others, and includes Amato’s video on the DVD. The stills that accompany the piece, taken from the video, show Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon at his parents’ home outside of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, chopping wood in the frozen winter, his breath visible, the sun and fire spreading a dose of warmth over the chill. Writes Amato in an accompanying note: “When I first heard Bon Iver’s record, I immediately wrote a treatment for a song that I liked, ‘The Wolves Act 1 & 2.’ The label was taking submissions for ‘Skinny Love,’ but I wrote on ‘Wolves’ because it was so unique — it was like a prayer.’

Writer Marc-Eduard Leon traveled with the Masses to the Marfa Film Festival in May, 2008. Accompanying photos by Ashley Haber highlight an epic journey in a bus owned by Masses member Alex Ebert, whose band, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, performed an epic closing-night set.Writes Leon of the final night of the Marfa Film Festival, which featured a screening of Heath Ledger’s video for Grace Woodroof’s “Quicksand,” and a performance by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros: “[B]y the time I reached the venue, it was packed and spilling out into the parking lot. There were so many people that it was practically impossible to distinguish the band from the audience. Marfans were drunk with anticipation, and as soon as Edward Sharpe began to play, they all started dancing and singing at the top of their lungs.”

The piece carries us on a bus filled with Masses members down Interstate 10 through Phoenix, Tuscon and El Paso on a journey to West Texas, where the Marfa Film Festival had invited us to screen our creations. The feature, written by Randall Roberts, offers a history of the Masses, addresses our philosophy backgrounds, and traces the peaks and valleys in the never ending quest of a creative ideal.
