Holy Spirits “Handmade Sun”
Remember that one summer you had a lovely adventure with an old scarecrow who magically came to life? Me neither. But “Handmade Sun,” a video by director Alistair Legrand for Brooklyn-based Holy Spirits, will leave you wishing that you had. An intricately woven collection of scenes from a simpler time, the video boasts all kinds of colors and textures that transplant you back to those lazy summer days on the farm. Sure, in a way the project was an excuse for Alistair to re-examine some of the best memories from his childhood, but it also serves as a valuable reminder of what times were like before television and Nintendo.
Yet perhaps the most endearing part of the video is the unwavering trust with which the girl approaches her new friend, the scarecrow. With his patchy, yarn-wrapped skull and his reflective eyes, he’s not exactly the picture of docility. Still, the girl seems to have no doubts about his intentions–of course they’re going to be best friends!
That’s why it doesn’t matter if you grew up downtown or in the hills–no matter where you spent your summers, everyone remembers that innocent naïveté, that faith in the impossible, that made every day seem full of infinite possibility. And that’s what makes “Handmade Sun” a video truly worth watching.
